The Savethehumans.com
Self-Gratification
of the Day Award

For the most unnecessary - but coolest - product, website, or doodad of the day.

The Winner for May 22, 2001

Free Longwave MP3s and Realaudio

Longwave may be the best band you've never heard of. They only narrowly won today's award, because their music is so good that calling it "unnecessary" is a bit of an insult. But compared to a glass of water in a hot desert, their music is indeed unnecessary. The difference is that their music is one of the things you'd look forward to listening to if you got out of the desert alive.

Go to Longwave's download page and download the MP3 of Strange (at the bottom of the page) or listen to the Realaudio version. You'll get a great example of their melodic vocals and smooth lead guitar work. The generic comparison to make is with Radiohead, though the songs aren't nearly as whiny. (Guess it just shows that Americans can even improve Brit pop.) Take a few minutes and discover a great new band.

The bottom four songs on the page are complete songs and entirely free. (Heart Attack should be your second download.) The rest of the songs on the page are clips from their current album, "Endsongs".

If you like what you hear and you'll be in NYC this weekend, see them at the Mercury Lounge on May 25.
