Ray's List of Weird and Disgusting Foods
As the name of the web page might imply, many of the foods Ray describes are weird and, not surprisingly, disgusting. He's got: spaek, shiokara, cynar, diniguan, fried pickles, and more.
One delicacy that caught my eye is something I know is available in NYC, and I have it on my to-do list to try it. (Granted, it's not very high up on my list.) That delicacy is called Baalut, also known as "the egg with legs" according to Ray. It's a fertilized duck egg, and contains a half-formed ducking, complete with little baby bones. Mmm, mmm, good!
And how about: drunken shrimp. This Chinese dish consists of "live shrimp swimming in a bowl of rice wine. You capture them with your chopsticks and bite the head off."
I've personally tried the natto, which Ray wisely includes. They're a Japanese dish consisting of fermented soy beans. They seem like they're covered in cheese, because a fine stringy substance stretches from the dish to your mouth when you try to eat them. Unfortunately, it ain't cheese; it's just the decomposing beans. Give me raw salmon eggs any day.
