A lot of what people describe as "kindness" is just the act of selling out in order not to have to separate oneself from the group. The "kindness" is the granting of momentary comfort to the ignorant by showing respect for ignorance.
"Kindness" and "generosity" in this sense is when an evolutionary biologist agrees to say grace at his mother's dinner table on Thanksgiving Day because the idea that men evolved from apes makes her feel funny. Telling himself it's "the right thing to do" is the duct tape he puts over that part of his mind and soul he just chose to sever. Unfortunately for his mind and soul, bullshit morality isn't nearly as effective as real duct tape, though apparently it sells just as well.
A world that puts this kind of "kindness" over truth, observation, honest opinion, and even the evaluation of what life requires for its mere preservation is a world that, as an example, talks about the merits of "world opinion" after a bunch of airplanes are flown into buildings. Is it scarier that someone would fly an airplane into a building, or that hordes of people are willing to volunteer to be passengers?
Does someone have the fucking balls to do something about this?
Here's a first step. Say something today that makes you a little nervous because someone might not like you for it. But only say it if it's real, and don't say it only to start saving the world. Say it because it's alright for a person to say what they believe without being attacked and put down for it.
You want to give something back to the community? Give a new idea. The gift might not be accepted, perhaps even rightly so. But it's the thought that counts.
