Letter to My Congressman on the Bailout Bill
I emailed this to my congressman today.
Dear Representative,
I know you already voted for the previous bailout bill. I’m asking that you reconsider and not vote for today’s.
Propping up these failed lenders with an involuntary taxpayer donation is fundamentally equivalent to propping up the risky borrowers that led to this problem in the first place. The first group should be left free to go out of business, like the second group should have been left free to be refused mortgages. If you can’t sustain your business or get a loan, why must others be forced to suffer the consequences?
Let those who assumed the risk pay for its consequences. Will there be effects elsewhere in the economy? Yes, but let’s not pretend we can eliminate the consequences of one group’s failings by simply redistributing them.
We need, for once, to let reality take its course.
Regards,
Jason Roth
